Book Review
"Rosie Dunne" (U.S. Version)
"Where Rainbow Ends"(U.K. Version)
By Cecelia Ahern
The story of two best friends, Young Alex and Young Rosie takes place in Dublin. They were 5 when they became inseperapable. When they were 16 (or was it 17?) Alex's Family had to move to Boston, because his dad got a promotion there. Their lives then went in different ways there after, but they managed to stay in touch, through e-mails, mails, instant messaging, memos, even sms-es. In fact, the book is written through a complete collection of Rosie's letters, e-mails etc to and from her closest friends and family... during different phases of her life. The story of her journey through life...all in a "shoebox" full with letters, and e-mail and chatroom printouts. It gives the reader a sense of intimacy with the characters in this novel. Letters and other forms of interpersonal communications afterall, are considered private. Even after decades of living and leading different lives they still are best friends until they finally realised they have loved each other all their lives. Their destiny was to be together from the begining, afterall. But they were to afraid to give destiny a try...so then things got messy.
Cecelia had done a great job in arranging the different phasses of her life. Showing that things don't just go wrong without any great reason. How to appreciatte what life has to offer... in the long run. Cecelia's words of advise, flows via her older characters in the novel. It amazes me how this young author can write and present her ideas and make it sound so wise beyond her years.
She has also done a great job on the epilogue of the novel. Very detailed without sounding too slow and draggy, i find. She puts the mood really well into words, for example Old, Frail Rosie.
I am truly inspired by Cecelia.
At the age of 23, she's become an author of 2 novels and a few other short stories!
She was a media communication student, majored in Journalism.
I bet any mass communication student would be so proud and inspired of her after reading her writings.
I cried a few times in different parts of the novel. It was out of humour, and sadness.
It's a great book. I will never see an instant mesage the same way again.
